  • You can be fined up to £20,000 per person for employing illegal workers
  • You can be sent to jail for up to 2 years if you’re found to have ‘knowingly employed’ an illegal worker
  • Always make sure new employees are allowed to work in the UK
  • You & your company can be held liable for the actions of a new employee if you do not perform basic background checks; i.e. such as verifying candidates' nationality from their passports
  • The UK Border Agency can still levy fines if it deems identity checks were not sufficiently rigorous
