The phrase, made famous by Charles Dickens’ Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, is often used to express disgust with many of the modern Christmas traditions. And with Christmas almost upon us once again, you may be feeling just like him.
But don’t expect the people in your business to be as forgiving and mild mannered as Bob Cratchet – Scrooge’s abused, uncomplaining and unappreciated clerk.
Despite your own emotions, the chances are that your people will be feeling more upbeat and looking forward to the festivities. And with Christmas being the time of ‘peace on earth and goodwill to all men’, it is the best opportunity to show your appreciation of their efforts and that you truly value them.
But even if you are in the festive spirit, it doesn’t mean you have to spend hundreds or thousands of pounds on a party or glitz and glamour. In fact, a genuine and heartfelt ‘thank you’ goes a long way.
What is required is careful thought about what motivates your people and what will appeal to their individual personalities. Showing thoughtfulness and that you know and understand your team, is far more effective.
So whatever you do this Christmas, don't just throw a load of money at it...think carefully about your team and how they would like to be acknowledged for their effort and commitment. And that’s why being Scrooge-like this Christmas is not such a bad idea!
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a hugely successful 2016!
